MEXICAN AIDS MORTALITY HOLDS STEADY DESPITE FREE ANTIRETROVIRALS


Although Mexico has achieved nearly universal free antiretroviral access, the proportion of HIV-infected people dying from the disease has not changed much over the past several years, according to the McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. The National Institute of Public Health recorded 6747 new HIV cases in 2008 and 5093 deaths caused by HIV infection. New diagnoses (incidence) fell by nearly 1000 from 2007 to 2008, but the AIDS death rate did not decline. In 2005, Mexico counted about 6500 new HIV infections and nearly 4500 deaths.
